President Rodrigo Duterte again expressed the willingness of the Philippines to accept Rohingya refugees fleeing Myanmar.
Duterte said he was “deeply concerned” that the human rights situation in Myanmar may worsen due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The Philippines will do its part to help those who are caught up in situations beyond their control. Our doors are open to our Rohingya brothers and sisters and other peoples of Myanmar who seek refuge,” the Chief Executive said during the recent virtual plenary session of the 39th ASEAN Summit.
He also called on his fellow ASEAN leaders to ensure the continued provision of humanitarian assistance to all vulnerable people in Myanmar.
“While focusing on comprehensive recovery efforts, we must stand with Myanmar in resolving issues peacefully and in a manner that prioritizes the welfare of its people,” said Duterte.
