Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque revealed on Wednesday that Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio tried to persuade him to run for senator in the 2022 national elections.
In an interview at the Kapihan sa Manila Bay news forum, Roque said he received a call from Duterte-Carpio on October 8 urging him to push through with his senatorial bid.
“I will reveal for the first time that on the last day of filing, Mayor Sara called me and she in fact said that I should run,” the Palace official said.
“She was persuading me to run. And I told her, ‘Ang hirap naman tumakbo na hindi ko talaga alam kung sino man lang ang ulo. How much more ang ulo na I don’t believe in’. Kaya although she was persuading me to go ahead and run, I said, I will not,” he added.
Meanwhile, Roque confirmed that the People’s Reform Party, a political party founded by the late Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago, asked him to join the senatorial race through substitution.
The Commission on Elections has set the deadline of substitution of candidates on November 15.
