Isko o Leni? Erice clueless on Mar Roxas’ presidential bet: ‘Private citizen na siya’

Will former Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas choose Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso over Vice President Leni Robredo in the 2022 presidential elections?

Former Liberal Party stalwart Edgar Erice said he has not received information that Roxas has declared support for the presidential bid of the Manila mayor. Erice however admitted he doesn’t know the preferred presidential bet of Roxas especially since the former Cabinet member has retired from politics.

“No, I am not aware of anything or any word from Mar Roxas that he is supporting Mayor Isko Moreno,” Erice told ANC’s Headstart host Karen Davila.

“Hindi ko alam ‘yan. Makikita natin ‘yan kung ano sinusuportahan ng Roxas City, ng Capiz, kung sino ‘yung sinusuportahan, ‘yun ang yung sinusuportahan ng pamilya Roxas,” he said, when asked if Roxas supports Domagoso as a private citizen.

Erice, dismayed with Robredo’s leadership of the Liberal Party, recently moved to Aksyon Demokratiko to join the team of Mayor Isko for the 2021 elections. Erice previously served as campaign manager of Roxas.

Robredo and Domagoso are among the presidential contenders in the 2022 presidential elections. The veep once reached out to Mayor Isko for the proposed united opposition but the coalition talks collapsed due to their contradicting stance on the Marcoses.

Roxas, the LP standard bearer back in the 2016 polls, has yet to declare support for any presidential candidate in next year’s elections. The former senator stayed out of politics and focused on his family after his heartbreaking defeat to then Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte in the presidential race.

Erice said Roxas is unlikely to leave the Liberal Party despite quitting the political scene. Roxas has also been a close ally of Robredo.

“Mar Roxas will not leave the Liberal Party. ‘Yung mga founders ng Liberal Party umalis na sa Liberal pero ang mga Roxases hindi umaalis ‘yan sa Liberal. They remained loyal to the Liberal Party. Ang kaibahan lang ngayon si Mar Roxas private citizen na so dapat irespeto natin ‘yung kanyang privacy,” he said.
