No law requires mandatory drug testing for election candidates: Palace

By Prince Golez

There is no law in the Philippines imposing drug tests on candidates running for public office, MalacaƱang said Friday.

According to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, the 1987 Constitution only requires aspirants to be a Filipino of a certain age.

Drug testing should be non-mandatory, Roque said during a televised briefing.

“Kung ako’y kandidato boluntaryo kong gagawin ‘yan para additional basis na ako’y piliin ng taong bayan,” according to him.

“I am not aware of any law that requires it. So, I think, beyond voluntary compliance. Hindi naman po natin pupuwede i-prescribe ‘yan kasi wala pong ibang kwalipikasyon na nakasaad sa Saligang Batas para maging kandidato kung ‘di ikaw ay Pilipino at of a certain age,” he explained.
