Panggulo ng Pilipinas! Robredo hijacks breast cancer awareness color for political gain

Vice President Leni Robredo has drawn flak from a number of netizens for choosing pink as the color of her presidential campaign.

Critics took issue in particular about Robredo wearing a pink ribbon when she announced her candidacy on Thursday (October 18). October is considered as the month for breast cancer awareness.

London-based blogger Malcolm Conlan said Robredo’s use of the color pink might negatively impact its meaning for breast cancer awareness advocates.

“I hope and pray that the pink ribbon does not now become a laughing stock and something that people begin to hate. I do wonder if the pink ribbon is actually copyrighted, or at least it’s use as a fundraising tool. I also hope that fundraising of various charities associated with the pink ribbon are not adversely affected by this move?” he asked.

Netizen Kenneth Bill said Robredo “ruined” the symbolism of the pink ribbon.

“What used to be an emblem of support and hope will now be viewed as a sign of dirty politics. Those who wear them in her political circle only have their personal political interest at heart. They will never think that what they are wearing is for those who have silently fought breast cancer,” he said.

Twitter user @tjthelocalweeb said a friend who posted a pink ribbon on Facebook to mark breast cancer awareness month was flooded with replies expressing support for Robredo’s presidential bid.

“Supporting is very important given the situation but yeah given the significance of the ribbon color given the month try to check first to not alienate people,” he said.

Abogados Trixie Cruz Angeles and Ahmed Paglinawan said Robredo’s use of the pink ribbon inadvertently and mistakenly put a political color to St. Luke’s Medical Center’s use of pink lights for its facade..

“Hindi lang ito ‘ay kapareho pala ng cancer awareness campaign’ this is starting to look like ‘Ay sabayan natin yung cancer awareness campaign para mukhang marami tayo,’” they said.
