Filipinos should vote for president and vice president as a tandem to avoid endless political mudslinging that puts national interest and security at risk.
This block voting of the country’s top two national positions has been proposed by former Interior and Local Government Secretary Raffy Alunan to foster better working relationship as part of the reforms in the country’s electoral system.
Alunan said the country already endured some “bitter experience” when the president and vice president belong to rival political parties. At present, the country’s president and vice president are elected separately every six years.
“One electoral reform I’d like to see emerge from our Legislature is block voting where the vote for a presidential candidate extends to the running mate,” Alunan said on Facebook.
If the country’s top two leaders belong to the same team, they could work better together that benefits the country, according to Alunan.
“The VP is the country’s spare tire in case anything happens to the President. When both belong to the same team, receptivity and interaction are potentially maximized, which is beneficial to society,” he said.
“One bounden duty of a Chief Executive, being a single 6-year termer in our case, is to build the VP’s wherewithal to take over effectively from Day One should a sudden change occur,” he said.
But when the president and vice president belong to different factions, Alunan said “bitter experience shows otherwise.”
“The ensuing dysfunctions at the top endanger our national interest, weaken national power and place national security unnecessarily at risk,” he said.
Relations between President Duterte and Vice President Leni Robredo have been strained due to differences in policies and ideals such as those related to the administration’s war on illegal drugs. The two leaders have exchanged insults and attacks in the past few years.
