House Assistant Minority Leader and Gabriela Rep. Arlene Brosas said more than 388,000 workers have experienced “chop-chop” salaries since January this year.
“Chop-chop yung sahod dahil bawas ang work schedules o di kaya ay floating hanggang ipatawag uli ng kumpanya. Ganyan ang horror story ng daan-daang libong manggagawa sa ilalim ng pandemya at kapabayaan ng gobyernong Duterte,” Brosas said.
Worse, Brosas said these employees did not receive assistance from the government since they are still considered employed.
Brosas is pushing for the passage of pandemic leave benefits to help COVID-19 infected workers and workers who remain in “floating status” due to temporary closures and reduced operations of companies.
The Makabayan bloc has filed the proposed Paid Pandemic Leave Act (House Bill 7909) in October 2020.
Citing data from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Brosas said at least 388,600 Filipino workers are affected by temporary closures of 12,409 establishments since January 2021 — bulk of which were in the Accommodation and Food Service Activities.
“This means nearly 400,000 families are living with vastly reduced income levels and are possibly sliding down to informal modes of work to make ends meet, on top of the millions of workers who permanently lost their jobs under the pandemic,” Brosas added.
The Gabriela Party-list lawmaker is urging Malacañang to certify HB 7909 as urgent, so that Congress can expedite its passage once its resumes its session next week.
