The decision of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio will affect not only the 2022 national elections but may even result to a change of leadership in the House of Representatives.
Congressmen were reportedly discussing the possibility of replacing Speaker Lord Allan Velasco should Carpio ultimately decide not to run for president in the 2022 elections.
Velasco’s closeness to Carpio was perceived to be the only reason why he became the speaker for the last 21 months of the 18th Congress aside from being a member of PDP-Laban, President Rodrigo Duterte’s party.
With Carpio out of the race, congressmen reportedly believed that Velasco has no way to become the Speaker in the next Congress.
Carpio can still substitute any of the presidential candidate who has filed their certificate of candidacy (COC) under a major political party until November 15.
It was learned that even some members of the ruling PDP-Laban are dismayed with Velasco because congressmen surrounding him were known supporters of presidential aspirant Manny Pacquiao.
PDP-Laban is currently divided between Pacquiao and the faction led by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi III who is supporting Senator Ronald dela Rosa and his running mate Senator Christopher Bong Go.
And who will replace Velasco, the congressmen are reportedly looking at House Majority Leader Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, the cousin of presidential aspirant former Senator Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos, to lead the Lower House.
