45 percent of Pinoys still feel poor: poll

By Prince Golez

Forty-five percent of Filipino families considered themselves poor in September 2021, a survey by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) found.

This is lower than the 48 percent reported in June of the same year.

The poll conducted from September 12 to 16 also showed that 34 percent of families rated themselves as “borderline poor,” while 21 percent felt they were “not poor.”

“The three-point decrease in self-rated poor in the third quarter of 2021 was due to a sharp decline in the Visayas and a slight decrease in Metro Manila, offset by a steady score in Balance Luzon and an increase in Mindanao,” SWS said.

Meanwhile, the latest SWS survey with 1,200 adult Filipino respondents said that 30 percent of families rated themselves as “food-poor,” 44 percent said they were “borderline food-poor,” and 26 percent felt “not food-poor.”

Of the 11.4 million poor families in September, 1.7 million were newly poor, 1.2 million were usually poor, and 8.2 million were always poor, according to the polster.
