‘You can’t trust elite politikos’: Robredo ‘malleable, cooptable’ after turnaround on anti-communist task force abolition – Bello

Vice President Leni Robredo is getting flak over her reported about-face on the abolition of the government’s anti-communist task force following a meeting with military generals.

Vice presidential bet Walden Bello criticized Robredo’s reversal on the controversial task force, saying it showed “elite” politikos could not be trusted. Robredo, a presidential contender in the 2022 elections, also indicated she was “malleable, manageable and cooptable,” he said.

Robredo recently declared support for the National Task Force to End the Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) after receiving a briefing from military officers about its anti-insurgency campaign. The veep said the task force was put in a bad light due to the “careless” statements of some of its members.

Robredo previously favored the abolition of the task force after it has been supposedly been used to harass people by baselessly red-tagging individuals and groups.

“Leni’s turnaround on NTF-ELCAC in order to curry favor with the AFP will not win the respect of the generals but simply tell them she’s malleable, manageable, and cooptable,” Bello tweeted on Sunday, November 28, 2022. “Tragic, and shows you can’t trust politicos of whatever stripe,” he said.

In a Facebook post, Bello stood firm that the task force must be dismantled, saying this was a “non-negotiable demand.” He said the task force was the centerpiece of the government’s “violent strategy to suppress progressive and liberal groups.”

Bello took a jab at Robredo for lauding the military, saying even liberal politikos bow to the “slightest pressure.”

“Vice President Leni Robredo’s reversal on this issue, along with her jaw-dropping congratulating the Armed Forces of the Philippines for ‘a job well done’ simply shows that you can’t trust elite politicians. Even the most liberal of them among them collapse at the slightest pressure,” he said.

Robredo’s action also highlighted that presidential bet Leody de Guzman remains solid alternative to elite politics, according to former Akbayan party-list representative.

Bello recently returned to the country to team up with De Guzman for the 2022 elections.

“This tacking to the right for short-term electoral aims speaks volumes about the strength of her convictions and merely underlines the wisdom of Ka Leody’s decision to run for office to offer a truly solid alternative to elite politics of both the soft and the hard kind,” he said.

After Robredo now backs the NTF-ELCAC, Bello wondered which issue the vice president will take back her word next.

“Where will she retreat next, on cooperating with the ICC in prosecuting Duterte?” he asked.
