For over five years, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte and her siblings have toed the line by staying in the background while showing a united front behind their father, President Rodrigo Duterte.
A Politiko source said Sara, Paolo and Baste kept their cool despite being boxed out of their father’s life in Malacañang with his long-time aide, Senator Bong Go, who was allied with the President’s partner Honeylet Avancena.
With the end of the President’s term looming and Sara’s stock soaring in presidential surveys, the first family of Duterte supposedly believed the time has come to rise in power.
But the source said Bong and Honeylet were not too keen on letting go of their power any time soon even if it meant spoiling the plans of the First Family.

By making the President run for vice president or for Go to run for either president or vice president in the 2022 elections, the source said the Bong-Honeylet camp would ensure they would extend their power over the next term by riding on the President’s enduring popularity.
The source said Sara saw through all of the Bong-Honeylet’s machinations of using her to further their stay in power, with the President as leverage.
“I was left with two letters endorsed to me by the President for consideration – one note explained why I should endorse the Go-Duterte tandem and the other suggested that I take in Senator Go as my vice president,” said Sara in Facebook post.

The source said the President was really intent on retiring from politics after his term ends as he has declared in various speeches. This explains why Duerte has been flip-flopping on his plans for 2020 because he was really tired of politics, the source said.
“But it appears the Bong-Honeylet camp wants to use the President to extend their stay in power. The second family group knows that if Sara wins, they’ll be shut out of Malacañang in the next administration,” said the source.
The source said Sara and her siblings have long harbored a grudge against Go who has been the President’s gatekeeper since his days as mayor of Davao City.

“Sara and her siblings are furious that they couldn’t even get straight to their father after his win in 2016 and that they feel slighted that they have to set an appointment and wait for Go’s signal. Contrast that to the full access of Honeylet to the President and you’d empathize with Sara,” the source said.
“They (Sara and her siblings) see Honeylet as the woman who stole their father from their mother (Elizabeth Zimmerman) and Go as the enabler. So you see where all this pent-up rage is coming from. That Go and Honeylet are lording it over in the administration has not been lost on the First Family,” the source added.

With Sara having a real chance to extend the Duterte’s reign in Malacañang, the source said the First Family felt disrespected that Go-Honeylet camp would unabashedly use their father further their policial ambitions.
