Breaking the violence against women: Risa teaches how to signal for help

There is no need to suffer in silence. This simple ‘danger’ hand-signal can potentially help save a life.

Reelectionist Senator Risa Hontiveros is raising public awareness about the “Signal for Help” a one-handed gesture to silently signal a person is in danger or need help. The movement involves facing the palm to the camera or person, tucking the thumb across the palm, and closing the fingers over the thumb.

Hontiveros showed the universal hand signal in her latest Instagram post and encouraged victims of abuse and violence not to be afraid to ask for help.

“Kung nakakaranas ka o may alam kang kaso ng domestic violence o anumang karahasan laban sa kababaihan, gamitin ang SIGNAL na ito,” the senator said, demonstrating the signal for help.

“Paalala ngayong International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women: kahit saan ka man, huwag matakot humingi ng tulong. 💜🙏🏼,” she added.

The hand signal was introduced by the Canadian Women’s Foundation last year amid concerns about the surge in domestic violence during the pandemic lockdown.
