Dr. Minguita Padilla bats for reforms vs political turncoatism: ‘Immature ang party system natin, kalokohan’

Senatorial aspirant Dr. Minguita Padilla believes it is about time to reform the country’s political party system to scrap political turncoatism or shifting allegiance from one party to another every six years.

In an interview on Politiko Live’s Balitang Sapol, Padilla admitted she is open to be a guest candidate of other political parties or standard bearers in the 2022 polls—but she would not choose to do so.

“I’m open to be a guest candidate kaso ang problema is if you are a guest candidate you still have to be loyal to one president. ‘Yun ang problema sa ating sistema, it’s so immature,” she said.

“Hindi naman pwedeng lahat sasalihan mo, I don’t believe that, you can be a guest candidate maybe because the presidential candidate believes na ikaw magaling kang senador kahit sino man ang maging presidente. Okay ‘yun. Pero kung sasabihin sa ‘yo, mag guest candidate ka pero dapat sa akin ka loyal hindi sa partido mo. Hindi naman pwede ‘yon,” she continued.

Padilla explained that in the existing political culture in the country, political parties have been an avenue and mere agent of patronage- and personality-based politics which have downgraded the real essence and agenda of the party system.

“I think we should start maturing as a people. Kasi right now, talagang immature ang party system natin, kalokohan. Partido dito, pag nanalo yung isang presidente tatalon ka sa ibang partido. So talagang there’s no sense in the party system. Walang kabuluhan ‘yung partido. It really doesn’t matter except machinery na lang siguro. Sana it comes to a point na sasama ka sa partido kasi naniniwala ka sa adhikain ng partido,” she said.

Although a newcomer in the elections, Padilla is no stranger to legislative work and political functions as she has been in the consultative bodies of government agencies throughout her career.

Padilla is an ophthalmologist, a professor, and a health reform advocate who is running under Partido Reporma, a political party headed by presidential aspirant Sen. Panfilo “Ping” Lacson.
