Kahit mag-shift sa Meta? Duterte stays connected with Pinoys via Facebook

Count President Duterte among the millions of Filipinos using Facebook.

According to senatorial aspirant Manny PiƱol, the President stays updated with issues and concerns of the people with the help of Facebook, which is rebranding as Meta.

The President has an existing Facebook account “Rody Duterte” with over 4.5 million followers. The most recent Facebook post was his National Heroes Day message posted last August 30.

“PRRD Reads Facebook!” PiƱol said in a recent Facebook post.

PiƱol, former head of the Mindanao Development Authority, bared Duterte’s social media presence in an attempt to explain why he hadn’t sent a letter to the President or sought an appointment with him to raise his concerns about the agriculture sector. PiƱol, an active Facebook user, believes his concerns will most likely reach the President anyway via the social media platform.

PiƱol said many netizens took him to task for raising his concerns on Facebook instead of raising them directly with the President, a personal friend.

“First, it is not easy to access the President especially in these times of a health crisis and it is not practical for me to seek an appointment everytime I have an issue to raise,” he said.

“Second, alam nyo ba na nagbabasa ng Facebook ang Pangulo?  Kaya punahin nyo yong mga pronouncements nya – timely at saka relevant kasi updated sya sa mga issues through the social media,” he said.

If he had sent a memo to the President, PiƱol is certain the document will just be among the papers piling up at the President’s office.

“I’ve been there and I’ve seen how the bureaucracy operates first hand,” he said.

PiƱol said he remains a “true friend” of the President despite raising some criticisms about the handling of problems in the agriculture industry.

“Please don’t worry, the President will not be offended by my critical comments because he knows that my intention is to contribute to a responsive governance,” he said.

“Also, I am proud to declare that I remain a true friend who sincerely prays that he succeeds. #RealFriendsTellTruths,” he said.

PiƱol previously served as secretary of the Department of Agriculture. He was later moved to head the Mindanao Development Authority. Recently, he quit his Cabinet post to run for senator in the 2022 elections.
