Leody de Guzman denies links to armed rebel group: ‘Hindi ako NPA o naging NPA’

Presidential aspirant Leody de Guzman is setting the record straight: He is not a member of the New People’s Army, the armed wing of the local communist party in the country.

The labor leader responded to allegations that he is affiliated with the NPA rebels, saying he has never been part of the armed group. Ka Leody is running for president under the the Partido Lakas ng Masa with a pro-worker platform.

“Nakarating sa akin ang tanong sa Reddit na NPA daw po ba ako. Hindi ako NPA o naging NPA,” De Guzman tweeted.

De Guzman disputed speculations that he was connected with the NPA due to his name “Ka Leody.” He explained that “Ka” is a term usually used to show respect for elders.

“Ang ‘Ka’ ay tawagan ng paggalang, hindi lamang sa kilusan kundi sa mga probinsiya. Hindi naman NPA si Ka Ernie Baron ng ABS-CBN o si Ka Erdy ng INC, ‘di ba?” he said.

De Guzman would rather join the elections than carry a gun in an armed struggle to seek reforms.

“Para sa akin, hindi primary form ang armed struggle, lumalahok nga tayo sa eleksyon at parliamentary struggle,” he said.

But he did not dismiss outright the NPA armed struggle. “Ngunit ang pag-aarmas ay may panlipunang ugat, mula kela Bonifacio, Sakay, Asedillo hanggang sa NPA at rebeldeng Moro,” he said.

The Duterte government has branded the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army a terrorist organization, denouncing its violent attacks on security forces and extortion of local businesses.
