Amid reports that other countries are now offering Olympian EJ Obiena to play for their flag, Manila Rep. Rolando Valeriano called for the resignation of Philippine Athletic Track and Field Association (PATAFA) President Philip Juico.
Valeriano said the Philippine Sports Commission has already told parties involved in the brouhaha to refrain from issuing statements but “Juico was on a media blitz, appearing for TV interviews. Worse, he kept saying things that do not reflect any impartiality on the part of PATAFA on the issue against EJ.”
Valeriano said Juico is basically driving away a world-class athlete.
Obiena’s long-time mentor, James Michael Lafferty, said many countries have expressed interest with Obiena and offered him to play for their country.
“This situation is spiraling out of control. And this is due to the head of PATAFA, who instead of taking care of the problem is the one making it worse. Juico can no longer do anything that will help the problem. Under these circumstances, he should just resign,” said Valeriano in a statement.
The solon earlier filed a resolution calling on the House of Representatives to investigate the brouhaha.
Obiena is a constituent of Valeriano.
