Probe into COVID deals prompted Duterte to seek Senate seat

By Prince Golez

One of the reasons why President Rodrigo Duterte is joining the senatorial race next year is to remind lawmakers how congressional inquiries should be conducted.

In a speech held in Oriental Mindoro Thursday, Duterte again slammed the Senate for its disrespectful treatment of resource persons invited to the hearing.

“‘Yung iba paupuin mo ng ilang araw tapos walang nangyari, binabastos mo ‘yung tao eh. You know, when you do that, you issue several summons and you can only dispose one subject matter for one witness, hindi maganda,” he said.

Last October, the President issued a memo prohibiting his Cabinet officials from attending the Senate investigation into the government’s purchase of allegedly overpriced Covid-19 supplies.

“Kaya ako tatakbo. Kaya ako ‘pag mag-ano sabihin ko sila na, you know, there are rules in the Congress but there are fundamental laws,” according to him.

Duterte is running for senator in the 2022 national elections under the Pederalismo ng Dugong Dakilang Samahan, an allied party of the PDP-Laban faction led by Energy Sec. Alfonso Cusi.
