Solicitor General Calida told critics of the Supreme Court (SC) to shut up following the decision that declared most of the provisions of the Anti-Terrorism Law as constitutional.
“Solicitor General Calida wishes to emphasize that even in the midst of issues that divide, what should remain is due respect for the High Court, and its integrity and procedures forming indispensable parts of our governmental framework,” the Office of the Solicitor General said in a statement.
The OSG pointed this out after “several personalities, including some Petitioners or their counsels, have issued derogatory statements against the Supreme Court.”
“Solicitor General Jose C. Calida takes exception against the foregoing attacks on the Supreme Court,”it said.
It reminded that the SC issued a Feb. 9 resolution “explicitly directing the parties and their counsels to refrain from discussing with the media the merits of the consolidated cases and their respective positions thereon for the whole pendency of the case.”
“A lawyer shall abstain from scandalous, offensive or menacing language or behavior before the Courts, and is duty-bound to observe and maintain the respect due to the courts of justice and judicial officers,” the OSG said.
“Unnecessary language which jeopardizes high esteem in the courts, or creates or promotes distrust in judicial administration is proscribed,” it added.
The high court recently deliberated over the 37 petitions seeking to declare as unconstitutional the Anti-Terrorism Law.
The tribunal declared the law as constitutional except for two provisions.
