President Rodrigo Duterte has declared a state of calamity in areas affected by Typhoon Odette.
The declaration was made during Duterte’s pre-recorded “Talk to the People” address Tuesday evening.
“Malakas ang bagyo na dumating sa buhay natin, and we are doing everything we can, ipina-fast track ko. Para hindi ko makalimutan, I have decided to declare state of calamity. So, I will sign it now,” according to him.
The Chief Executive said the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council recommended the declaration of state of calamity in Regions 4B, 6, 7, 8, 10, and 13.
“The declaration of the state of calamity will hasten the rescue and relief and rehabilitation efforts of the government and the private sector, including saan galing ang tulong be it outside or tayo-tayo lang,” said Duterte.
This, he added, will ensure availability of basic commodities at reasonable prices in the areas.
