President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday offered the health secretary post to molecular biologist Fr. Nicanor Austriaco of OCTA Research.

During his pre-recorded “Talk to the People” address, Duterte said he would be “happy” to appoint Austriaco as the new chief of the Department of the Health (DOH).

The Chief Executive said DOH Secretary Francisco Duque III, who has been heavily criticized for his department’s Covid-19 response, has expressed desire to rest “after all this ruckus against him.”

“I have been forcing him (Duque) to stay. He would be happy to give way to you. I am sure,” Duterte told the OCTA Research fellow.

“We would be blessed if you decide to accept the portfolio of Secretary Duque. Short stint. I am sure Secretary Duque would only be too happy to give way,” he added.
