May nagpabaya! NBI to file charges over cop’s death due to inhalation of toxic fumes

By Nancy Carvajal

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) will file charges for negligence over the death of a police officer who inhaled a toxic disinfectant while in a police-managed quarantine facility in Pasig last year.

A source told Politiko that there are persons who should be held accountable for the death of Capt. Casey Gutierrez.

“It’s a tragic death, but there was negligence. Investigators are wrapping up the report and will file the case before the year ends,” an NBI insider with knowledge of the investigation said.

Gutierrez was detailed at the Philsports Arena quarantine facility to attend to COVID-19 patients. At the end of his duty on May 24, 2020, he and two other police officers experienced difficulty in breathing after a supposed routine disinfection process.

The young doctor died at the Lung Center of the Philippines due to inhalation injuries while S/Sgt. Steve Rae Salamanca and Cpl. Runie Toledo of the PNP Medical Reserve Force, were treated at the PNP General Hospital.

The PNP previously attributed Gutierrez’s death to accidental exposure to hazardous chemicals.

There were reports that the disinfecting chemicals used at the Philsports Arena quarantine facility were different from those used at another PNP-managed facility located at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay.
