Manila Mayor Isko Moreno’s campaign manager—who played a key role in President Rodrigo Duterte’s 2016 run—doesn’t believe the Chief Executive is serious in pursuing his senatorial bid.
Lito Banayo said Duterte’s candidacy may be a reaction to the Senate’s investigation on the government’s pandemic supply contracts.
Several high-ranking government officials were implicated in the probe for allegedly favoring little known Pharmally Pharmaceutical Corporation, which bagged P10 billion worth of contracts from the government over a year.
“I had a certain degree of closeness with the President. I don’t believe at the end that President Duterte is serious in running,” Banayo told One News’ “The Chiefs.”
Banayo said Duterte, who served a single term as congressman of Davao City’s first district from 1998 to 2001, “doesn’t enjoy legislative work.”
“Kung minsan reaction lang kasi masyadong matindi ang Senate investigation, especially when his Cabinet are targeted. Nasasaktan siya,” he said.
“I saw parang gut reaction niya. I can be wrong but I don’t think he really wants to be senator,” Banayo added.
The veteran campaign strategist said there’s no guarantee Duterte will become Senate President should his candidacy succeed, saying the Senate is more independent than the House of Representatives.
He noted that Taguig Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano aspired to become Senate President early in Duterte’s term, but a majority of senators elected Senator Aquilino Pimentel III.
“[Ang] Senate President kasi, iboboto ka ng 23 na kasamahan mo. ‘Di ‘yan katulad ng pagiging Speaker,” Banayo said.
