Robin Padilla to support pro-federalism president

Senatorial aspirant Robin Padilla plans to support a presidential contender who will pursue federalism if elected in office next year.

Padilla offered to support a pro-federalism leader after his preferred bet, administration Senator Bong Go, dropped out of the 2022 presidential race.

President Duterte also earlier dropped his federalism agenda after failing to get the support of Congress.

Ika nga sa inglis Follow the leader,” Padilla wrote on Facebook.

Padilla is among the PDP-Laban senators endorsed by President Duterte in the 2022 elections. The ruling party has fielded no standard bearer in next year’s elections amid the conflict between two factions.

In his Facebook post, Padilla talked about “loyalty” and federalism proposal. His post included his photos with Duterte and Go.

Padilla pushed anew for a shift to federalism to decentralize system of governance and bring progress across the country. He is concerned that another six years of unitary system of government will only prolong the burden of Filipinos especially the poor.

Duterte abandons federalism agenda

President Duterte had long advocated for a federal form of government to spur regional development but was unable to get enough legislative support to implement such move.

When he spoke before a US summit on democracy, he said his government tried to broaden democratic participation through federalism, but his constitutional project did not get Congress support. “So be it. I respect the separation of powers vital for democracy,” he said.
