Take climate change seriously! Pacquiao blames pollution for super typhoons

Senator Manny Pacquiao on Monday called on everyone to heed the call of the United Nations Climate Change Commission that the country should take immediate and concrete steps to reduce pollution.

He noted that the Philippines is always one of the countries hardest-hit in the world by the effects of climate change.

“We should all take climate change seriously. The government must immediately take concrete steps to be ready for the disasters and calamities that our country has been facing and will still face as a result of climate change,” Pacquiao said.

“The United Nations Climate Change Commission warned us in 2007 that our country would be one of those that will be hit hardest by these severe weather disturbances. It is already happening,” he said.

“There is no escaping this, which is why we should always be prepared and not be caught with our pants down. Government relief efforts should be ready for any such disaster,” said Pacquiao, who is in General Santos City to coordinate and supervise relief efforts for the victims of super Typhoon Odette.

Odette has just exited the country, leaving over a dozen people dead, and devastating several provinces in the Visayas and Mindanao, which are now without power and off from the rest of the country.

“Aside from being prepared with relief efforts, government should have ensured that basic and essential equipment such as satellite phones should have been distributed to all provinces. Hindi pwedeng lagi tayong umaasa sa tulong ng private sector,” Pacquiao said.

“Dapat ang pamahalaan ang nangunguna sa pagiging handa at sa pagtulong sa ating mga kababayan na lubos na naaapektuhan ng mga ganitong kalamidad,” he added.
