2022 game plan: Trillanes to file cyber libel vs pro-Duterte bashers

‘Tis the season for cyber libel complaints.

In about two years, former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV is dead set on filing cyber libel complaints against President Duterte’s allies allegedly targeting the opposition.

Trillanes has started to gather evidence against the pro-Duterte bashers by asking netizens to send any libelous statements issued by the group.

The former lawmaker is seeking to collect the alleged defamatory statements hurled against the opposition or critics of the Duterte administration.

“Patulong po sa pag save ng mga screenshots ng mga libelous statements ng mga makaduterte laban sa mga oposisyon o kritiko ng duterte administration,” Trillanes tweeted.

“Magfa-file po tayo ng cyberlibel sa mga ito sa 2022,” the former lawmaker said.

Trillanes announced his plan to file cyber libel cases after Rappler boss Maria Ressa was convicted for the same offense by a Manila court. Ressa and a former writer were sentenced to prison for up to six years in a court verdict. Her camp will reportedly appeal the court decision.

The conviction of Ressa has been seen as a blow to press freedom by her supporters. The Palace disputed the claim, saying it was all about holding Ressa accountable for allegedly abusing press freedom.
