As the geopolitical rivalry between the United States and China continues, President Rodrigo Duterte called on other leaders from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries to remain united.
Duterte joined other ASEAN Leaders in productive discussions at the 36th ASEAN Summit held via video conference Friday.
In his speech, the President enjoined the 10-member states of the ASEAN to defend “an open and rules-based international order that gives all countries – large or small – not just one voice, but an equal standing.”
The rivalry between the two nations, he added, has resulted in “complex relations” in the past six months.
“The great powers will continue to draw us into their respective camps, we should continue to nimbly engage them in ways that most benefit us,” Duterte said.
