Uphold rule of law in South China Sea, Duterte tells regionals leaders

President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday urged all parties involved in the South China Sea (SCS) dispute to respect the rule of law to avoid escalating tension.

During his seven-minute speech at the 36th ASEAN summit, Duterte noted recent incidents in the SCS, enjoining other countries that claim the waters to “refrain from escalating tensions” and abide by responsibilities under the international law of the sea as reflected in the the 1982 Law of the Sea Convention.

“Lahat po ng aprtido ay dapat iwasan ang pagdadagdag pa sa tensyon at lahat po dapat ay sumunod sa kanialng rsponsibilidad sa ilalim ng international law lalung-lalo na po sa 1986 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a virtual presser.

“Hinimok ng Presidente ang lahat ng bansa to adhere to the rule of law atsaka doon sa mga committments nila to international instruments kasama na po ang 2002 Declaration of the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea,” according to him.

Roque added that other ASEAN Leaders agreed sought to finalize a South China Sea code of conduct to settle any conflicts and disputes by peaceful means.

“Marami ring nagbanggit sa South China Sea at kaparehong sinasabi nila kinakailangan ibigay natin anga ting atensyon sa pagbubuo ng Code of Conduct diyan sa South China Sea para maiwasan pa ang hidwaan at kinakailagan sumunod po sa rule of law,” he concluded.
