Romualdez pats House on back for ‘unprecedented’ work in passing Covid bills

House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez congratulated his colleagues after the adjournment of Congress last Friday, saying their unprecedented work led to 1,630 bills and resolutions being processed in only 60 session days.

He also lauded the 302 members for speedy approval on third reading of six anti-Covid-19 measures as part of the Duterte administration’s strong response against the coronavirus disease.

“The House of Representatives performed its tasks commendably by answering the challenges and demands of our duties and responsibilities, especially on passing measures that would mitigate the economic impact of the global health crisis,” said Romualdez, the chairman of the powerful House committee on rules.

“As promised, we worked round the clock to ensure the approval of major anti-Covid measures that were filed in the House of Representatives,” Romualdez stressed.

Aside from the Bayanihan Act or Republic Act 11469, the law that was enacted in March 2020 granting President Rodrigo Duterte additional authority to combat the Covid-19 crisis, the House also approved six priority measures to combat Covid-19 on third and final reading.

These include House Bill 6815 or the P1.3 trillion Accelerated Recovery and Investments Stimulus for the Economy of the Philippines (ARISE Philippines Act), HB 6817 or the proposed Covid-19-Related Anti-Discrimination Act, HB 6865 or the “Crushing Covid-19 Act which mandates the conduct of baseline Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing as the protocol for COVID-19 testing for the vulnerable members of the society, and HB 6709 or the Covid-19 Unemployment Reduction Economic Stimulus (CURES) Act of 2020.

The House also approved on second reading HB 6864 or the proposed “Better Normal for the Workplace, Communities and Public Spaces Act of 2020” to prepare and educate Filipinos for life after quarantine.

Romualdez pointed out that anti-Covid measures are designed to kick-start the economy through infrastructure spending programs that would create jobs and boost public health with the continued threat of the disease.

“I thank my fellow House Members for rising to the challenge of the times, working until 12 midnight and attending sessions that lasted until Thursday and Friday,” he said.
