Health Secretary Francisco Duque III is on his way out of the Cabinet, Special Envoy to China Mon Tulfo claimed Tuesday (June 30).
Quoting a source in Malacañang, Tulfo said in his Manila Times column: “The President is just waiting for Duque to hand him a resignation letter.”
Tulfo said the appointment of Southern Philippines Medical Center chief Dr. Leopoldo Vega as Health Undersecretary is a “writing on the wall” for Duque, who has been criticized for lapses in the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Senators earlier called for Duque to resign amid the continued rise in COVID-19 cases in the country, but he said he serves at the pleasure of President Rodrigo Duterte.
According to Tulfo’s source, Duterte just allowed Duque to stay on out of gratitude for supporting his candidacy for president.
“Duque gave [Duterte] all-out support even when his ratings were down during the campaign and you should know the President’s deep sense of gratitude,” Tulfo quoted his source as saying.
