BI relieves 2 personnel for falsifying travel records of ex-Wirecard COO

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra revealed two Bureau of Immigration (BI) officers have been removed from their posts for allegedly falsifying data about the arrival and departure of former Wirecard chief operating officer (COO) Jan Marsalek.

Guevarra said the two BI officers have been “transferred to other units pending investigation.”

“Once the fact-finding report shows culpability, the appropriate sanctions will be imposed,” he said.

He noted one of the BI officers had been removed from his post at the BI main office in Manila, while, the other got relieved from his assignment at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA).

Wirecard, Germany-based payment service provider Wirecard, is currently facing a scandal over missing 1.9 billion euros.

The BI removed its two officers from their posts after looking into discrepancies regarding Marsalek’s arrival in Cebu in June.

BI data earlier showed that Marsalek arrived at the MCIA on June 23 then departed for China on June 24.

“The BI has established that Jan Marsalek, former COO of Wirecard AG, did not arrive in the Philippines on June 23 based on CCTV (closed circuit television) footages, airline manifests, and other records,” Guevarra previously said.

“He also did not depart on June 24 [for China], as there was no such flight to China as indicated in the data base of the Bureau of Immigration,” he added.
