Duterte to decide on medical frontliners’ ECQ plea soon

Some Cabinet members met Saturday evening to discuss the medical community’s plea to place Metro Manila under a two-week enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) to reduce the number of coronavirus (Covid-19) infections.

“Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea convened a meeting tonight, August 1, with key members of the Cabinet,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a statement yesterday.

The meeting took place after President Rodrigo Duterte directed the Inter-Agency Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases to immediately act on the concerns raised by medical frontliners.

Budget Secretary Wendel Avisado, Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez, Health Secretary Francisco Duque, Interior Secretary Eduardo Ano, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, Senior Deputy Executive Secretary Michael Ong, and Presidential Assistant for Foreign Affairs Robert Borje attended the meeting.

Also present were the National Task Force (NTF) Chief Implementer Charlie Galvez, Deputy Chief Implementer of the NTF Vince Dizon, One Hospital Incident Command Chief Leopoldo Vega, and Senate Health Committee chair Christopher Lawrence Go.

“This is to address the concerns of the medical community. Recommendations from the aforesaid meeting will be also be submitted tonight for the President’s review,” said Roque.

As of Saturday, the Department of Health recorded 4,963 new infections, bringing the total number of Covid-19 cases to 98,232. The number of recovered patients currently stands at 65,265, while death toll climbed to 2,039.
