May pag-asa pa! Ping sees signs of hope for PhilHealth with top-level resignations, executive branch’s resolve

Finally, there are signs of hope that corruption-free times lie ahead for the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth), Sen. Panfilo Lacson said Wednesday.

Lacson cited the resignation of two top officials and the show of resolve by a task force headed by Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra, with full support from President Rodrigo Duterte.

“(PhilHealth SVP Rodolfo del Rosario Jr.’s) irrevocable resignation is one of many reasons to hope for some good things to come in view of the ongoing DOJ-led Task Force investigating the recent PhilHealth anomalies. The paying members and all taxpayers who contribute to the state health insurance fund surely deserve a break from the cyclical corruption involving its top executives,” Lacson said in a statement.

He also noted the resignation of President and CEO Ricardo Morales, adding he felt sorry for him “not for anything else but for his health condition.”

“I hate to think that the stress brought about by the intense hearings of the Senate Committee of the Whole may have taken a toll on his already infirm health condition.”

Lacson added that in spite of Morales’ possible complicity that could make him face some serious legal problems stemming from the report of the Senate Committee of the Whole, “I still wish that he wins his bout against cancer and recovers.”

Earlier, Lacson said both del Rosario and Morales are among the PhilHealth officials who could face charges, including malversation of public funds and violations of the Tax Code.

On the other hand, Lacson pointed out Justice Sec. Menardo Guevarra is on top of the situation, with full support being extended by Duterte. Guevarra heads a powerhouse task force looking into the irregularities at PhilHealth.

“(This) is something that we did not see in past investigations of PhilHealth anomalies,” Lacson noted.

“We can only pray and hope that the renewed effort will be sustained all the way to its logical conclusion,” he added.
