Salamat, Archbishop! Ping mourns passing of ‘dear friend’ Archbishop Oscar Cruz

Sen. Panfilo Lacson on Wednesday joined Filipinos in mourning the passing of anti-jueteng crusader Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Emeritus Oscar Cruz, who died at age 85.

In a post on his Twitter account, Lacson recalled Cruz, a vocal enemy of illegal gambling and other wrongdoings, as a “dear friend who loved our country next to God.”

“Goodbye Archbishop Oscar Cruz. He was a such a dear friend who loved our country next to God. I used to pass by his archdiocese in Dagupan City whenever I traveled to the north. We would discuss anything from religion to the problems besetting our country. God is in good company,” he said.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines announced early Wednesday that Cruz died at 6:45 a.m. at the Cardinal Santo Hospital “due to a lingering illness.”

Cruz attracted national attention when he spoke out against jueteng and corruption.
