Malacañang on Saturday welcomed the Supreme Court’s (SC) decision to allow Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipino worker on death row in Indonesia for drug trafficking, to testify against her illegal recruiters.
“Nagagalak po kami diyan dahil at least, makikita natin na si Ms. Veloso po ay naging biktima kung tatanggapin iyong kaniyang testimoniya,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in an online press briefing.
Last Friday, the SC denied the motion for reconsideration filed against its decision allowing Veloso to testify against Cristina Sergio and Julius Lacanilao, the recruiters who sent the death row convict to Indonesia.
“The basic issues raised therein having been duly considered and passed upon by the Court in the aforesaid decision and no substantial argument having been adduced to warrant its consideration,” the high court said in a March 4, 2020 resolution.
No further pleadings, motions, letters, other communications will be entertained in relation to the case, it further said.
Veloso was arrested in 2010 at the Yogyakarta Airport for alleged possession of 2.6 kilograms of heroin found in her luggage.
She was set to be killed by firing squad in 2015 but was given a reprieve from execution following an appeal from then-President Benigno Aquino III.
