Despite row, Duterte asks Malaysia to assist Pinoys stranded in Sabah

President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday requested the Malaysian government to assist the return of Filipinos stranded in Sabah.

Duterte made the appeal despite the “ticklish” territorial dispute between the Philippines and Malaysia over Sabah.

“I am happy to hear from (Defense) Secretary (Carlito) Galvez (Jr.) that they are coming home, some of them are from Sabah. Iyon, malamang doon din even the issue of hospital care. That has been a very ticklish issue between our government,” according to the chief executive.

“We are trying our best to appeal to the humanitarian sense of the Malaysian government to please help our citizens in your country, as we would do for your citizens if they are in our country,” he also said.

Prior to this, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana reported that 2,000 Filipinos had been sent back to the Philippines from Sabah. Some 3,000 Filipinos in Sabah have still to be repatriated.
