Ping chides Gringo for claim that PH internet speed ‘not so bad’: Dapat ‘Very Good’ o ‘Excellent’!

Instead of being content with “not so bad,” the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) should be finding ways to dial up internet speeds in the Philippines to “excellent,” Sen. Panfilo Lacson said Thursday.

Lacson also chided DICT secretary Gregorio Honasan II, his classmate at the Philippine Military Academy Class 1971, for saying we are “not doing too badly” in terms of internet speeds in the Philippines.

“With all due respect to a highly regarded Cavalier and distinguished former Senate colleague, ‘not so bad’ may sound worse than ‘not so good,'” Lacson said in a statement.

Honasan drew flak for his statement, with many netizens complaining of poky internet connections.

On Wednesday, Honasan told lawmakers the Philippines has an average connection speed of 3 to 7 Mbps – while the speed in other countries can go as fast as 55 Mbps.

Lacson pointed out that in the middle of a pandemic, Filipinos have turned to internet-powered services, many of which require virtual communication.

“In the middle of a pandemic when the order of the day is virtual communication, what we want to hear, at least realistically, is ‘good enough,'” he said.

“Of course, it goes without saying, ‘very good’ or even ‘excellent’ is what we all want to hear from DICT. Clearly, there is much room for improvement,” he added.
