Senate Majority Leader Migz Zubiri on Tuesday thanked President Rodrigo Duterte for his assurance that Philippine Red Cross (PRC) will be paid the P930 million in debt owed by the government for its Covid-19 testing service.
“We thank the President for helping the Red Cross get paid for the service its rendering government for its massive Covid testing drive all over the country,” the senator said.
Duterte made the commitment to Red Cross in a television address on Monday night after the organization stopped its free coronavirus testing services for Filipinos last October 14.
“Do not worry. We will pay. It will take time, but we will pay. We will look for the money,” he said.
Zubiri noted that the government had partnered with Red Cross to “provide that service especially for all arriving OFWs to the country and to most LGUs who need PCR testing for their constituents.”
“Being one of the cheapest to provide that service its a welcome development that we are getting paid by Philhealth so PRC can buy the needed inputs and materials to continue its operations for massive testing,” he said.
“As a non-profit organization the Philippine Redcross is extremely proud of being the number one covid tester for the Country with almost 50 percent of the PCR test results of our citizens were provided by this Humanitarian Organization, considered also as a frontline organization of our people,” he said.
PRC is chaired by Zubiri’s colleague, Senator Richard Gordon.
