DDS no more? Alvarez bolts Duterte’s PDP Laban

Former House Speaker and current Davao del Norte 1st district Rep. Pantaleon “Bebot” Alvarez recently has decided to part ways with ruling administration party Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP Laban).

In his letter to PDP Laban President Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III dated November 12, Alvarez formally tendered his irrevocable resignation both as secretary-general and member of the political entity chaired by President Rodrigo Duterte.

Alvarez’s resignation came just weeks after he expressed support for the continuity of the speakership of Taguig-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano and turned down the former’s supposed term-sharing deal with current House Speaker Lord Allan Velasco.

Velasco, also a member of PDP, is well known for his closeness with Presidential daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte.

The President’s daughter reportedly played a critical role in connection with the ouster of Alvarez from the House leadership back in 2018.

Alvarez sought the understanding of Pimentel over his resignation as the former House leader intends to commit and pursue a voter’s education campaign for Filipinos given the importance of the 2022 elections.

The former Speaker stressed that “serving as a ranking officer and member of PDP-Laban while simultaneously handling this advocacy may be misconstrued by critics as politicking by the Party presently in power.”

According to Alvarez, he recently accepted the offer from the camp of former Defense Secretary Renato de Villa to lead as chair and revive Reporma, a non-mainstream party not affiliated with any personality reportedly seeking the Presidency.

“This way, the voter’s education campaign can proceed, and rightly be perceived, as politically neutral without risking possible backlash against PDP Laban,” Alvarez added.

Alvarez thanked Pimentel and other PDP honchos for allowing him to serve as the secretary-general of the ruling party for nearly half a decade.

He also thanked PDP Laban for its support during the 2016 and 2019 elections. He added that “the Party’s assistance for those campaigns that led to historic electoral victories cannot be understated. (CMC)
