Malaking tulong sa OFWs! Duterte praises Saudi labor reforms

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte welcomed the launching of the Saudi Arabia’s Labor Reform Initiative (LRI), which aims to enhance the contractual relationship between workers and employers.

Duterte considers the LRI as a major labor reform program that will improve the working conditions of and benefit migrant workers, including almost 800,000 Filipinos in the kingdom, a statement from Malacañang read.

The LRI, which will take effect in March 2021, will allow workers to transfer to another employer without the current employer’s consent upon contract expiration.

It will also allow workers to travel outside the Arab nation without their employer’s approval, and leave the country without their employer’s consent upon contract expiration.

Duterte, according to the statement, recognizes the new labor reform as a “significant step” towards addressing concerns over the traditional sponsorship regime that exists in most parts of the Middle East.

Meanwhile, the President renewed his administration’s commitment to continue working closely with His Majesty King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud to further strengthen cooperation in fields of mutual interest, including the promotion of the rights and welfare of Filipinos in the kingdom.

“The Philippines remains committed to the advancement of migrant workers’ rights and welfare and will continue to strongly advocate for and work with all partners for the immediate fulfillment of the objectives of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration,” the Palace said.
