Roque on Duterte sex jokes: Hindi na s’ya magbabago

By Prince Golez

Malacañang asked the public not to give “too much meaning” to President Rodrigo Duterte’s blatant sexism and misogyny.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque issued the statement after the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) said that sexual objectification and sex jokes of women are “forms of violence against women.” The CHR was referring to Duterte’s and a local official’s sexist jokes during a situation briefing in Camarines Sur last November 15.

“Ganon lang talaga si Presidente at hindi na siya pupuwedeng magbago because he’s already in his 70s. Pero wala pong any malice ang mga joke niya,” Roque said in a virtual presser Thursday.

The secretary also cited the President’s pro-women policies during his term as mayor of Davao City for more than 22 years.

“Makikita natin na Davao really stands out as a model city pagdating sa upholding and asserting women’s rights, reproductive rights and providing them security against domestic violence.

“Ang pakiusap ko po, huwag tayong parang Amerikano. ‘Yung mga Amerikano kasi lahat binibigyan ng napakalalim na kahulugan pero dito naman sa Pilipinas, let’s take a joke for what it is, a joke,” he added.
