Binay opposes use of yantok vs quarantine violators: Fight pandemic with compassion, not heavy-handed approach

No to yantok.

Former Vice President Jojo Binay is opposed to the use of yantok or rattan sticks to whip violators of health protocols against the coronavirus illness.

In his latest Facebook post, Binay said he welcomes the Palace’s refusal to back the police plan to use such stick to enforce the physical distancing rule. The pandemic, he said, should be addressed with compassion instead of using such oppressive approach.

“We must address the challenges of this pandemic with compassion for our citizens,” he said.

“I welcome Malacanang’s statement rejecting the use of yantok sticks against supposed violators of physical distancing. It’s about time we move away from heavy-handed approaches,” he said.

The former vice president observed the government’s strong approach has only affected many people but cases of coronavirus continued to rise.

“May mga nasaktan at namatay dahil sa ganyang paraan ng pagpapatupad ng lockdown pero patuloy pa rin tumataas ang mga kaso ng COVID,” he said.

Police authorities earlier announced plans to use rattan sticks to check public compliance with minimum health standards, including the one-meter distancing. The stick will reportedly be used to offenders who resist to observe such health measures.

The country has so far logged almost half a million cases of coronavirus with deaths reaching more than 8,000.

We must address the challenges of this pandemic with compassion for our citizens.
