Palace optimistic about free Covid-19 tests by 2021

By Prince Golez

MalacaƱang expressed optimism that the government can afford to undertake free coronavirus (Covid-19) tests next year.

In his weekly address to the nation Monday, President Rodrigo Duterte said he wanted state-run health facilities to provide free swab tests by the first half of 2021.

“Iyan po ang ninanais ni Presidente at iyan din naman po ang nakasaad sa ating Universal Healthcare Law na ating isinulong at iyan po ang dahilan kaya nga ang pangunahing nagbabayad ng PCR test ay PhilHealth para hindi na taumbayan ang magbayad,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said when asked if the government can afford to shoulder the cost of Covid-19 testing next year.

Duterte had asked Health Secretary Francisco Duque III to study the possibility of conducting Covid-19 tests free of charge.

“Tingnan kung may pera at magbili na lang tayo. And in all government hospitals or in health centers, magbigay natin libre,” the President said.
