Kaya sinibak Deputy Speakers! Leachon admits Velasco got butthurt by Cayetano boys’ attacks

House Speaker Lord Allan Jay Velasco didn’t let bygones be bygones after wresting the speakership from Taguig Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano in October.

Barely a month after sessions resumed in November, Velasco started purging the House leadership of Cayetano’s allies. Among the lawmakers who lost their posts as Deputy Speakers were Camarines Sur Rep. Luis Raymund Laguna Rep. Dan Fernandez.

Deputy Speaker Salvador “Doy” Leachon admitted Thursday (December 10) that Villafuerte and Fernandez’s removal from key leadership posts was a consequence of their criticism of Velasco at the height of the speakership tug of war.

“When you actually demean a person out of professional context, that you were even attacking his own personal… personality already of Speaker Lord Velasco, tapos saying, badmouthing aba mahirap ‘yan,” Leachon told reporters.

The Oriental Mindoro lawmaker, who bagged the plum leadership post after Velasco became Speaker, said it was hard to work with someone identified with the rival camp.

“How can you properly communicate and partner for the effectivity of your measures before the House when you’re actually working on parang magkaiba na linya?” he said.

Interestingly, Velasco retained as Deputy Speaker Mandaluyong Rep. Neptali “Boyet” Gonzales II, who’s also an ally of Cayetano.

“Siguro lang nakikita natin competency niya for so long a time he was Majority Leader. [He] can help rebuild a new administration under Speaker Velasco,” Leachon explained.

Asked why Villafuerte and Fernandez weren’t treated the same way as Gonzales, Leachon said: “Mahirap naman ‘yun. Parang tatawanan tayo ng taumbayan.”
