The reputation of the House of Representatives has sunk even lower with the decision of Speaker Lord Allan Jay Velasco to appoint more of his allies as Deputy Speakers, bringing the number to 29 as of December 7.
Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) chairman Lito Banayo expressed exasperation over the ongoing reshuffle in the House, saying in his December 9 column for the Manila Standard that it won’t be long before the position of Deputy Speaker becomes “singko mamera na lang” or cheap.
Having 28 Deputy Speakers alone, Banayo said, means each leader “is theoretically in charge of just 10 other peers” in the 304-member House.
Banayo, however, said there’s nothing cheap—money-wise—about electing Deputy Speakers.
“Not only because it costs our taxpayers additional perks, and a pre-emptive say on the pork, but also because the deputy speaker becomes a member of the “comite de paki-alam”, as in pwedeng pakialaman ang lahat,” he said.
Taking a potshot at Velasco, Banayo asked: “For reasons of self-respect and dignity, naman. Has anyone in the HoR discovered the meaning of ‘gravitas’?”
