May pandemya na, may atake pa! NUPL slams gov’t over rights abuses in 2020

The past year has been marred not just by the COVID-19 virus but also by government attacks against human rights, the National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) said.

“We have been challenged both to persist amid a global health crisis and surmount an epidemic of state violence and impunity,” the NUPL said in its New Year’s message.

“These have been days of disquiet and our refusal to be silenced,” the laeyers group added.

While scores of unarmed activists were either killed or imprisoned on the basis of trumped up charges in 2021, the NUPL cited it has “caused the junking of charges against people exercising their rights to free assembly and speech amid the world’s longest lockdown, as well as freeing the persecuted.”

“It has also stepped up the plate in urging domestic and international accountability for the arrogant, entitled and bigoted,” added NUPL.

With this, the group said it is looking forward to 2021 “with wisdom and steeled with resolve engendered by the past year of intense trials and heavy tragedies as well as triumphs of no small measure.”

“To our members, clients, allies and friends, thank you for enduring this tortuous journey together as we shall be working even harder for justice and a new year of hope and arduous struggle,” the NUPL assured.

“To our oppressors and detractors: see you in court and in the streets. Try as you might, you don’t get immune from retribution with an overdose of terror, deception, ineptitude and dopiness. Quos Deus vult perdere, prius dementat,” it warned.
