Following wide public criticism, President Rodrigo Duterte has suspended the implementation of the Child Safety in Motor Vehicles Act, Malacañang said Thursday.
In his virtual presser, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said Duterte decided to defer the full enforcement of the law requiring children aged 12 years and below to be seated in car seats while inside motor vehicles.
“Nag-decision na po ang ating Presidente. Ipinagpaliban po or deferred ang pagpapatupad o impelementasyon ng car child seats,” Roque said.
Signed by Duterte in February last year, Republic Act No. 11229 prohibits a child below 4 feet and 11 inches to take the front seat of a motor vehicle.
An erring driver will be fined P1,000 to P5,000 for not complying with the law. In addition, the driver’s license shall be suspended for a period of one year for the third and succeeding offenses.
