Another Supreme Court justice has opted for optional retirement, following in the footsteps of Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta.
Supreme Court Associate Justice Edgardo Delos Santos announced that he will leave the judiciary a year ahead of his retirement on June 12, 2022.
In a letter sent to his staff dated March 19, 2021, a copy of which was obtained by Politiko, Delos Santos expressed “deep sadness” over his short stint at the Supreme Court.
“I have agonized over this decision to hang my judicial robe early. I spent sleepless nights trying to think of a better—no, make that—the best way to announce my decision to you, my staff, in light of the trying times we are currently experiencing,” he said.
“In the end, I succumbed to the frailty of human emotions, that as I mustered to overcome my sadness during my announcement this afternoon, I tactlessly covered it up by trying to be funny,” Delos Santos added, without going into specifics about the reason for his early retirement.
The 68-year-old magistrate’s impending departure from the Supreme Court comes at a challenging time for the judiciary, which is facing issues of corruption and attacks against abogados.
President Rodrigo Duterte appointed Delos Santos to the Supreme Court on December 3, 2019, to fill the seat vacated by retired Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio.
Before his appointment to the Supreme Court, Delos Santos served as a Cebu-based Court of Appeals Justice for more than 11 years. Prior to this, he was a municipal trial court judge in Dumaguete and later became a regional trial court judge in Bacolod.
