The House of Representatives has approved on second reading a measure imposing stiff penalties against individuals involved in illegal drag racing.
The proposed Illegal Drag Racing Ban Act (House Bill 8916), authored by Quezon City Rep. Precious Hipolito Castelo declares drag racing as illegal when it is not sanctioned or without the authority of the concerned agencies or the local government unit having jurisdiction of the place where the drag racing was held.
Under the measure, participants in the illegal drag racing will be imprisoned for one year and fined ranging from P300,000 to P500,000.
The driver’s license of the participants will be suspended for six months and the violator will be required to undergo a seminar prescribed by the Land Transportation Office (LTO).
Individuals who will repeat the violation will be perpetually disqualified from obtaining a driver’s license.
The vehicle used in illegal drag racing will be impounded.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and local government units are mandated to implement the measure.
