The House Committee on Transportation endorsed for plenary approval a measure seeking to impose stiffer penalties against drunk and drugged drivers.
House Bill 8914, authored by Deputy Speaker Michael Romero and 1-Pacman Rep. Enrico Pineda will amend the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013 (Republic Act 10586).
Under the measure, the penalty for driving under the influence of liquor or dangerous drugs will be meted with six months imprisonment and fine ranging from P50,000 to P100,000.
The current law provides three months imprisonment and fine of P20,000 to P80,000.
If the violation resulted in physical injuries, the penalty will be six months to 12 years imprisonment and fine ranging from P150,000 to P200,000 depending on the injuries of the victim.
If drunk or drugged driving resulted to homicide, the penalty will be 12 to 20 years and fine ranging from P350,000 to P550,000.
The non-professional license of the driver will be suspended for 18 months. If the offense is repeated, the license will be revoked.
If the driver uses a professional driver’s license it will be revoked immediately.
After five years from the enactment of the measure, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) will be authorized to review the penalties and recommend increasing it to the Office of the President.
