Sumunod pulis, militar: Group says Duterte liable for ‘Bloody Sunday’ deaths

By James Hernandez

President Rodrigo Duterte is accountable for the deaths of nine unarmed civilians during the raids of offices and houses of those with alleged links with communist groups, the Public Interest Law Center (PILC) said on Monday (March 8).

The PILC said in a statement that the raids conducted in Laguna, Rizal, Cavite and Batangas Sunday’s (March 7) took place “on the heels of President Rodrigo Duterte’s recent speech calling on the military to ‘kill’ and ‘finish off’ rebels.”

However, the PILC said the raids showed “the the real targets of his ‘kill’ order.”

“President Duterte and the police and military have shown no qualms targeting and killing unarmed civilians especially those who are critical of his administration,” the group said.

“We hold them accountable for this spate of assault on activists,” it declared.

The PILC said that Sunday’s raids “were carried out while we are still in shock over the attempt on the life of our colleague Atty. Angelo Karlo Guillen on March 3, 2021.”

It added that police reports said that there nine activist-leaders who were killed and six arrested.

“Among those arrested is paralegal and human rights worker Nimfa Lanzanas. Nanay Nimfa, mother of political detainee Edward Lanzanas, assists families of political detainees,” it noted.
